Practicums:
Practicums are typically offered on a part-time basis, and provide initial
training for diagnostics and intervention of children ages birth-21. Preference
is given to students who have a primary interest in pediatrics. We accept students
from all university programs, but require that a contract exist with that university before final acceptance of a student. To apply for a practicum, please call our office (352-368-7728), and ask to speak

Intern/Externships:
Internships and externships are offered on a full-time basis. The purpose of this type of program is to ready graduate students for their entrance into the “real
world” of Speech-Language Pathology. This type of experience is offered
only to those students who will be pursuing a career in the pediatric category of Speech-Language Pathology. The following avenues of supervision are offered, so that upon completion of an internship/externship at
this facility, students can feel confident in their primary clinical skills:
- Diagnostics:
Exposure to and training in the use of a variety of tests for pre-school and school-aged children. Types of testing materials will include, but not be limited to, pre-school aged speech and language tests;
school-aged language, language processing, phonological processing, reading, and written language tests. Students will also be required to score testing obtained in evaluation, interpret results, and decide appropriate
recommendations. Feedback will be given to students verbally and after review of their written evaluation for each patient.
- Intervention:
Exposure to and training in therapy techniques for children with varying needs.
Students will initially observe treatment sessions for patients and record significant clinical findings, which will
be discussed with them daily. They will then begin writing plans for each patient
they are assigned. When they can sufficiently write a plan detailing goals and activities for achieving goals, they will progress
to providing services to the child. Feedback will be given after each session
so that students can measure their progress in service provision. The eventual
goal is for the student to be confident with 80-90% of supervising therapist’s caseload, so that they are able to provide
services with only minimal supervision.

Clinical Fellowships:
Clinical Fellowships are offered by a certified, master’s level clinician. This type of fellowship is available to those who have received a master’s degree
from an accredited university and wish to receive further training in this field in the area of pediatrics. It is a paid clinical position. Fellows are supervised during numerous
treatment sessions and diagnostics. Their daily notes and evaluations are reviewed
by their supervising therapist to insure understanding of general and advanced knowledge for treatment and testing techniques.

Assistantships:
We do offer assistantships for individuals who hold a bachelor’s degree
in Speech-Language Pathology from an accredited university. This type of program
is designed for those who would like to practice hands-on therapy techniques in pediatrics as prescribed by a master’s
level, certified Speech-Language Pathologist.
We abide by all laws and rules set forth by ASHA and the State of Florida Department
of Health Board of Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology. Therefore, the initial
component of an assistantship focuses on familiarizing the clinician with therapy techniques for all pre-school and school-aged
children, review of state and ASHA rules and laws, and review of pre-determined goals that will be achieved in the first 6
months of the assistant’s clinical experience.
